Mission Statement

TED-Ageing Without Children (AWOC) is working with individuals and organisations to raise awareness, provide support and create a society in which those ageing without children feel recognised and understood.

“ I am pleased to add my support the new TED Ageing Without Children Group (AWCG) and to help raise awareness of those who are ageing without children, particularly in our rural district of East Lindsey. I understand that this will have been particularly difficult during the pandemic.

I would like to thank Patricia Faulks, Jane Berni and the entire TED Ageing Better Team in East Lindsey for their hard work in setting up this group.

Thank you to Patricia for sharing her own story and using her experience to benefit others. This new AWCG provides a much-needed opportunity to connect with residents who find themselves in a similar situation and to discuss their own experiences.

I wish you every success for the online launch event, and I look forward to supporting the journey of the TED AWCG in the months and years ahead.”

Victoria Atkins, MP

What do we mean by “ageing without children”?

The issue of people ageing without children was brought to our attention by Patricia Faulks, a resident in East Lindsey and someone who is ageing without children.  We are now working with Patricia and others to develop information and support for people who are ageing without children locally.  People ageing without children are a largely invisible and ignored group and yet it is estimated that 1 in 5 people ageing in the UK do not have children.

Individuals are ageing without children for a wide range of reasons these include:

  • those who have never been parents either through choice or through circumstance
  • those whose children predeceased them
  • those completely estranged from their children
  • those whose children are unable to support them for another reason e.g. they have a long term disability or they are in prison

The TED Ageing Without Children launch event was held on the 15th of April 2021 and included national and local speakers.  A link to the recording is here.
